March BoTM: Sofia Valdez, Future Prez

This month's book of the month is Sofia Valdez, Future Prez written by Andrea Beaty, illustrated by David Roberts.

Sofia Valdez is a second-grader who loves to do things for her community with her Abuelo. One day Abuelo gets hurt falling down a large landfill, giving Sofia the idea to turn “Mount Trashmore” into a park! This book demonstrates speaking up for what you believe in, and how one person can spark action within a whole community.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is something you can do to help your neighbors? Could you help take care of their pets or plants? Can you lend them something they don’t have? Could you write and leave them kind notes? Try to do at least one kind thing for someone this week!

  2. When have you been courageous like Sofia?

  3. Draw a picture of a new park for your town! What would it have in it?

  4. Would you ever want to be the president? What actions would you take as president?

  5. What is a project you would want to implement in your community? Would you want to build a park like Sofia? Or a garden? Maybe you want to start a book or craft club?
